AKIM Israel - National Association for the Habilitation of the Mentally Handicapped in Israel

One out of every hundred children is born mentally retarded to some degree. Some of these children grow up to become a part of society or live at its edges, perhaps without the general public being aware of it. Others will need treatments all their lives.

AKIM Israel is the national association that represents 30,000 mentally handicapped people and their families. AKIM was founded in 1951 by a group of parents to mentally handicapped children.

We at AKIM believe that every mentally handicapped person has the right to a suitable education and to a full life with respect to housing, employment and leisure activities.

AKIM protects the rights of the mentally handicapped public and their families. We accompany and advise the family of the mentally handicapped every step of the way.

Throughout Israel there are regional branches of AKIM, most of which are run by the parents of the mentally handicapped and by volunteers.

AKIM's social service promotes the establishment and operation of services for the mentally handicapped in the community, including day care centers for infants, and for adults, hostels, apartments in the community, employment and job placement programs in the open market, or 0, 5% of the population:

10,000 mentally handicapped children
20,000 mentally handicapped adults
120,000 family members must cope with mentally handicapped members.
