Someone close who can understand
Mazal Cohen, mother of twenty-nine-year old Limor, volunteers on the parental support hotline.
“I went through a very difficult period when Limor’s situation deteriorated. I called and asked for assistance. We were able to immediately bond with Tova, a volunteer who had gone through the same difficulties.
When things began to settle down again I joined a training workshop and from being helped I became a helper. I thought that if I could succeed in preventing other families from going through what I had gone I would know that I did the right thing.
From my own experience I know that there are moments when you need someone close to you who can listen and understand”.
Tova, Smadar’s mother
Tova Mesilati, mother of twenty-eight-year-old Smadar, is a member of the Holon branch executive and volunteers on the parental support hotline.
There will always be someone who will listen and give advice: “We grew up without the hotline and that was very difficult. We did not know who to turn to for advice, to share our problems with. Today with the strength that I have I can support other parents. Smadar’s story touched me right away. From my experience I knew that it was important for her not to feel that she has to go through this phase without accompaniment.
This is the strengthening feeling we have at AKIM, that there is always someone there who will listen and guide”.
“Parents for parents”
AKIM runs a national hotline, no. 1-800-399-333. The hotline is free of charge; it is manned by parents who have undergone appropriate training. The hotline provides every caller with warm emotional support, advice from personal experience, information and referral to appropriate professionals and organizations. The line operates in Hebrew and Arabic.
Please Help Mazal and Tova to succeed in preventing other families from having to go through what they did.
