We are not alone

We are not alone

Shahar Mei-On, father of six-year-old Idan, one of the founders of the AKIM branch in the city of Modi’in:

When we were told that our son Idan was born mentally retarded we took the news very hard. It did not take us long to realize that alone we would not be able to cope. So I turned to AKIM. I found out that although there are many families like ours in our city, we have no one to really turn to. I decided to whatever I could so that we would become one large united family that would be treated as equals among equals. We built the branch gradually. Today I am the chairman of the branch which represents some fifty families, and do everything in power so that our objectives will be attained.

Our battles are not easy, but the backing of AKIM really helps. We now have power, since we are not alone.

AKIM branches

Throughout Israel there are about sixtyfour local and regional branches.

Most of the branches are run by parents and volunteers. Branches serve as representatives of the mentally handicapped population at the level of the local authorities while the AKIM-Israel center does the same at the national level. Many branches provide a variety of services such as leisure-time activities, residence outside the home, psychological support for families, etc.
