To commence I would like to say, as a parent to a mentally-retarded child, how grateful I am for the great privilege of being the head of the largest parents’ organization in Israel, AKIM-Israel.
It has been my good luck to make an acquaintance with a community whose members’ hearts are open constantly to accept the other and the different.
I would like to express my deep appreciation to all my dear friends, volunteers and contributors who invest their time and their money so that we can provide a better life for the mentally retarded and their families.
AKIM-Israel was established about fifty-five years ago, thanks to the perseverance of some parents and their struggle to ensure that the needs which arise from the different reality in which their children live will be met and that they will be able to live a life of security and dignity. Today AKIM is the Israeli organization with the greatest amount of activities on behalf of the mentally retarded.
AKIM constantly seeks to broaden the world of the mentally retarded in every aspect of their lives: recreation activities and the development of personal artistic interests such as the theater and the plastic arts, poetry, integration into the general labor market, legal advice, creating appropriate living conditions in familiar surroundings, and continuous support and assistance by parents for parents.
